Getting to North Turkana

Access Kenya's remotest reserve

North Turkana National Reserve requires extraordinary effort to reach with extremely long road journeys or charter flights representing Kenya's most challenging protected area access requiring experienced operators and self-sufficient expeditions.

Road Access (Extremely Challenging)

Nairobi to North Turkana: approximately 800km, 12-16+ hours minimum via Kitale, Lodwar, continuing north on deteriorating roads. Final sections barely passable—deep sand, rocky tracks, minimal maintenance. 4×4 convoy essential. Complete self-sufficiency required—fuel, water, food, camping equipment. Experienced drivers, local guides mandatory. Emergency communications equipment essential.

Charter Flights

Charter flights from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Lodwar or closer airstrips if available. Flight duration: 2-2.5 hours. No scheduled service to North Turkana—charter-only. Ground transfers from airstrip still require several hours through difficult terrain. Costs: $4,000-$7,000 round-trip depending on aircraft. Helicopter access possible but extraordinarily expensive.

Expedition Planning

Often combined with Sibiloi National Park, Lake Turkana cultural sites for comprehensive Turkana Basin exploration. Multi-week expeditions maximize remote area access. Permits, permissions, community liaisons essential. Book specialized operators 6-12 months ahead. Very few operators service this extreme remoteness.
