Getting around Kenya

Most safari guests mix short domestic flights with private 4x4 transfers—self-drive is possible but rarely ideal for first-timers inside parks.

Typical patterns

Nairobi is the hub: Jomo Kenyatta for international, Wilson for bush hops. Operators bundle driver-guides, fuel, and park fees so you are not negotiating gates yourself.

  • Scheduled air: Caravan-style aircraft to Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, and coast airstrips—arrive at Wilson with soft bags within airline limits.
  • Road: Nairobi–Mara is a long day; many prefer to fly one way or both. Coastal links often use SGR or flight to Mombasa/Ukunda.
  • Urban: Ride-hail exists in Nairobi/Mombasa; use hotel-arranged transfers after dark if unsure.
