Nairobi Day Trips | Things to Do
Nairobi Day Trips | Things to Do, You already know that Kenya is a great place to see wildlife. But did you know that there is a lot of wildlife in Nairobi City too? You can see baby elephants playing in an orphanage, feed giraffes in an urban sanctuary, or watch lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, buffalo, and hippos roam freely just minutes from the busy streets of the city.
There are close things you can do on one of our Nairobi day tours if you’re interested in Kenyan history or culture.
Things to do in Nairobi: see nature and animals
Imagine leaving your hotel in Nairobi and being on your own private tour in Nairobi National Park in just a few minutes. You’d be on the edge of the city, deep in a dramatic savannah. Watch out for buffalo, zebras, giraffes, ostriches, hyenas, and of course, big cats.
After that, you’ll go to the David Sheldrick elephant home to watch the cutest animals feed from big baby bottles. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has been around since 1977 and works with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service to protect and keep those special places in Kenya. People can “adopt” a baby elephant for as little as $50 a year, which helps pay for its care each year. This visit is unique and should not be missed!
Visit the Giraffe Center to see other big animals. This is where the rare Rothschild’s Giraffes live. You can get close to these big animals and even feed them on these beautiful grounds. The Giraffe Center has been protecting and growing this breed of giraffe that is in danger of going extinct for 40 years. In the same way, it has given its millions of tourists chances to be entertained and learn about these unique animals.
Other places in and around Nairobi to see nature and animals:
Karura Forest is an urban forest in Nairobi that has places to hike, walk, ride bikes, and have picnics.
Food, history, and culture are things to do in Nairobi.
There is a lot of history and stories to be told in the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. Named after the well-known author of “Out of Africa,” the coffee garden was built in 1906. The grounds are about a 30-minute drive from the center of Nairobi. They are full of history and custom and feel like a wild oasis. There are also high-end cabins on the property, which were built more recently in 2001.
At the Coffee Garden, they serve more than just coffee. On the menu, you can find fresh soups and salads, as well as favorites like pizza and sandwiches. It also serves traditional Kenyan food like Kuku Kienyeji, which is chicken cooked with fresh tomatoes, onion, garlic, and cilantro.
Nairobi’s Carnivore Restaurant, which is near Wilson Airport and is a famous landmark, has open-air seating and, you got it, meat for miles! As you eat, you can choose from pieces of lamb, pork, beef, and even ostrich and crocodile. Traditional Maasai swords are used to roast the meat over a charcoal fire near the restaurant’s door. The inside looks and feels like a cross between a rustic home and a banquet hall from the Middle Ages.
The next stop is the Karen Blixen Museum, which became popular after the movie “Out of Africa.” “I had a farm in Africa” is a line that everyone who read the book or saw the movie will remember. These are Karen Blixen’s words as she talks about her life running a coffee farm at the base of Kenya’s Ngong Hills.
Today, the house and grounds have been beautifully fixed up, and you should definitely take a day trip from Nairobi to see them. There are many large rooms that hold things that belong to Karen as well as furniture and props from the movie.
Finish the day at the beautiful Kazuri Bead Center, where women make bright, one-of-a-kind clay jewelry. Kazuri, whose name comes from the Swahili word for “small and beautiful,” was founded in 1975 as a workshop in Nairobi. Its goal is to help single mothers in the nearby area. Kazakhstanuri was started by Lady Susan Wood, whose goal of giving these strong women jobs is still going strong today.
Around Nairobi, you can also do the following historical and artistic things:
The Kenya Railway Museum has a lot of interesting artifacts from East Africa’s rail past that go back to the early 1900s.

Bomas of Kenya is a culture village that shows how different Kenyan tribes have kept their traditional homes alive through architecture, crafts, music, and dance.

History and geography of Nairobi
It is the capital and biggest city of Kenya, and about 4.4 million people live there.
The name “Nairobi” comes from the Maasai word “Enkare Nyirobi,” which means “the place with cool water.”
The city began in 1899 as a simple train depot on the line that connected Mombasa to Uganda. It grew quickly and in 1963 became the capital of a free Kenyan republic.
The city is in the south of the country, on the Nairobi River. It is 1,795 meters above sea level.
Mount Kenya is to the north of Nairobi, and Mount Kilimanjaro is to the southeast.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the main airport. It’s about 12 miles from the center of Nairobi’s business area.
You should be careful if you walk around Nairobi without a helper, but during the day it is usually safe to go there.
Most tour companies can arrange private transfers from the Nairobi airport to your hotel.
Nairobili Climate and weather
