Why Nyerere National Park?

Perhaps you haven’t heard of this park – the largest in Africa and one of the largest in the world. That’s because it only came into being in 2019, carved from the even larger Selous Game Reserve.

Being relatively new, Nyerere is still not that well-known among safari tourists, meaning fewer visitors and more pristine nature for you to enjoy.

The Rufiji River

This mighty waterway cuts through the park and is the lifeblood of the ecosystem. Wildlife flocks here during the dry season (June–October), and so will we.

What You’ll See

Big cats like lions, leopards, and cheetahs… elephants, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest… plus bushbuck, hartebeest, eland, spotted hyenas, vervet monkeys, and waterbuck.

Nyerere boasts Africa’s largest population of over 1,300 African wild dogs—incredible creatures that can reach speeds of over 40 mph!

The Habitats

Explore diverse habitats such as acacia hills, woodlands, swamps, riverine forests, and open grasslands. These support a dazzling variety of wildlife and over 445 species of birds.

By the lakes and rivers, look out for kingfishers, pelicans, skimmers, ibis, storks, hornbills, and more.
