The Highlands Lodge

The Highlands Lodge sits on the end of a forested mountainside, neighboring the Olmoti Volcano. A unique feature of the Lodge is the shape of the dome-shaped canvas tents, all situated with incredible views. The main area of the Lodge comprises a comfortable lounge area, with a cozy fireplace adding to the charming ambiance while meals are enjoyed in the indoor dining room or out on the terrace, perhaps even a bush breakfast or dinner if weather permits.

Guests can enjoy some time relaxing in the library or indulge in a spa treatment during their stay. Gathering around the outdoor campfire is the perfect way to end the day, guests will be lulled by the crackling fire, and given a chance for them to share stories of their day on safari. There is a small gift shop for guests to browse through in search of their ideal souvenir. There is WiFi throughout the camp and guests have access to laundry services during their stay.

Location

The Highlands Lodge is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area near Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. It is located near the Olmoti Volcano. Flights from Arusha Airport to Lake Manyara Airstrip followed by a three-hour drive is the best way to get to the Lodge. The drive from Arusha Airport is around four and a half hours.

Rooms / Tents

The eight Luxury Dome Suites are unique in their design, the dome shape offering a truly out-of-this-world ambiance. The suites have floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor deck that wraps around the dome-shaped tent, both offering an ideal space to sit and gaze out over the forested hills and surrounding wilderness.

• Standard Suites (6): Configurable as double with king-sized bed or twin with two single beds.
• Honeymoon Suite (1): King-sized bed and an outdoor hot tub – ideal for romantic escapes.
• Family Suite: King-sized bed with one or two single beds in a smaller tent on the deck for children aged five and older.

All rooms include mosquito netting, a sitting area, a safe, writing desk and chair, woodfire stoves, throws and rugs, a tea/coffee station, hanging space for clothing, WiFi, and room service. Bathrooms are all en-suite with a toilet, vanity, and shower, and include guest amenities.

Game Viewing / Activities

Thrilling safaris are on offer when staying at The Highlands Lodge, with morning and noon game drives possible both on the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and at the nearby Ngorongoro Crater, a one-hour drive away. Visiting a local Maasai village will introduce guests to the rich traditions and heritage of these wonderful locals.

Guests can enjoy nature walks and bird-watching-focused outings in the surrounding wilderness, with a visit to Olmoti Crater, a 90-minute drive away, or Empakaai Crater Soda Lake which is a 20-minute drive. Both options offer an exciting alternative to a standard safari. Hiking at Olmoti will bring guests closer to incredible birdlife and beautiful butterflies, while a visit to the Empakaai Crater will give them a chance to see flamingos noted to gather in this region.
