Forodhani House is a beautiful holiday house set gently on Shela Beach, an eight-mile stretch of white sandy beach along Lamu on Kenya’s eastern coastline.
With a small, dedicated team running the house, privacy and an intimate beach escape are easy to imagine and feel.
There are only five en-suite bedrooms, all offering outstanding views over the Indian Ocean or out towards Lamu’s Old Town, from a small balcony.
An inviting swimming pool is the perfect place to cool down at the end of the day.
Dinner is served by the house chef who dishes up excellent meals—from seafood platters to fine meat dishes, international or local cuisine, the choice is yours.
Forodhani House accommodates up to 13 guests with five en-suite bedrooms, all with fantastic views from your balcony over the sea or out towards Old Lamu Town.
There is a kids’ playground and, for adults looking for a little pampering, a menu of massages is available.
Many excursions are on offer too, from water-based favorites to land-based discoveries.
Location
Forodhani House is located at Shela Beach, which forms part of the long stretch of beach at Lamu along Kenya’s east coast.
Flights from Nairobi to Lamu or Manda Airport take approximately one hour, departing from either Jomo Kenyatta or Wilson Airports.
It is not advisable to drive from Mombasa’s Moi Airport, as it would take around seven hours on a bumpy road and four hours from Malindi Airport.
Rooms / Tents
There are only five beautiful en-suite bedrooms at Forodhani House, some looking out over the sea or towards Lamu and its historic Old Town.
There is also a self-catering unit available, comprising a fully-equipped kitchen and barbeque area.
All accommodations offer super king-size beds, with the option of single beds or cots available for families.
Amenities include air-conditioning, a living area, tea/coffee-making facilities, satellite television, WiFi, and 24-hour room service.
The décor is simply stunning, with Swahili-inspired architecture and antique furniture featured in each room.
Dark teak-wood doors complement woven carpets and colorful art pieces on the walls.

Game Viewing / Activities
Activities are endless—from all types of water sports including wave boarding and windsurfing, to scuba diving around the coral reef of Lamu Island.
Kite surfing and snorkeling are two favorite activities enjoyed by guests.
Those who are keen can enjoy bream fishing in the channel or big-game fishing out at sea.
Dhow boat rides are exceptional, with full-day trips across to Manda Island a popular option.
Guests can also take an excursion into Lamu’s Old Town for a cultural and historical experience.
