Discover Murchison Falls National Park

Discover Murchison Falls National Park, why do so many people visit Murchison Falls National Park? Is it the amazing collection of more than 73 animal types… or the famous mighty falls? On your African trip to Uganda’s biggest and best-known park, you can make up your own mind. But Murchison Falls is one of the best places to see a wide range of natural wonders and a lot of wildlife.

Take the famous cascade as an example. It’s where the 50-meter-wide Victoria Nile is quickly squished through huge rocks into a 6-meter-wide channel, creating a show of exploding water, foam, and mist that shakes the ground around it. The falls crash into the “Devil’s Cauldron,” making fog clouds and a unique rainbow. Such a beautiful sight, Hollywood came to shoot the falls for The African Queen, starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

The water flows more slowly toward Lake Albert from there. Elephants and buffalo often come to the sides of this river path. In addition, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and many water birds often join the scene.

The scenery of Murchison Park is beautiful, with woodlands, savannah, and riverine forest, as well as lots of acacia trees and expressive Borassus palms. You can see lions, antelope, waterbucks, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, the Ugandan kob, and three-quarters of the world’s Rothschild’s giraffes on safari because of all the plants and animals that live there.

A park as big and famous as Murchinon would not be possible without lots of beautiful birds. Over 450 species live here, including the rare Goliath heron and shoebill stork. The African jacana, the yellow-footed flycatcher, the Abyssinian ground hornbill, and the malachite kingfisher are some other bright and interesting species that have been seen.

As you go south of Murchison, you’ll find the Bugondo Forest Reserve, a park inside a park. It’s a big area of tropical forest where 76 different kinds of mammals and many more bird species live. The tall mahogany trees that hold the forest together can also be found here. But maybe the best thing about Bugondo is seeing all the chimps that live in this lush, untouched forest.

Just the rhino is no longer in the park, leaving the “Big Five” animals of Africa. The close Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, on the other hand, was built to help bring back the endangered white rhino. If you go to the area, you’ll be able to see the 22 southern white rhinos that are now safe in this sanctuary.

About Murchison Falls National Park: Murchison Falls is Uganda’s biggest park, covering 3,893 square kilometers (1,503 square miles). It is in the northwest of the country. From east to west, the Victoria Nile flows through the park for 115 km (71 mi).

The weather is usually warm here because this is a tropical place. All year long, the temperature stays the same, around 31°C/88°F during the day and 18°C/64°F at night. From March to November is when it usually rains. From December to mid-February and from June to July, it’s dry.

When to go: All year long, the park is open.

What’s the best time to go? The wildlife is easiest to see and gather at the park’s water sources during the dry seasons. This is not the best time to watch birds, though. More birds are coming and going during the wet season.

To get there, take a tour with African Safari Kenya from Kampala. The trip takes about 4 1/2 hours.

Chalet planes take off and land at Chobe airstrip from Entebbe.
