Explore One, Two, Or Three-Day African Safari Adventures

When you arrive at Mombasa’s port, you disembark into a multicultural city full of vibrant sights, lively sounds, and enticing aromas – all infused with traditional flare and flavor. Visitors arriving by sea will receive a warm welcome from the Adventure In The Wild Safaris local team, who will walk you to your jeep and ensure your Mombasa and Kenyan adventure begins the moment you step ashore.

Whether you’re in port for just the day or beginning a longer East African safari, your welcome will be as warm as the coastal breeze and the Indian Ocean you sailed in on.

History of The Mombasa Port

As the largest port in East Africa, Mombasa’s port is strategically located at the deep-water inlet of Kilindini Harbour. This historical gateway once welcomed Arabian Dhows and later the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. During the golden age of the Spice Route, Mombasa thrived as a key trading post.

Following Tanzania’s colonization in the late 1890s, trade grew exponentially. Commodities such as sugar, coffee, and tea were moved in great quantities—an activity that continues today. Mombasa Port now connects to over 80 global seaports and is a hub for more than 30 shipping lines.

Modern-Day Mombasa Port & Cruises

Mombasa Port remains vital to the transport of goods across East Africa, reaching inland countries like Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania. It also plays host to international cruise ships such as the Norwegian Dawn, MSC Poesia, MS Ambience, and boutique vessels like Seabourn Sojourn and Hapag-Lloyd’s MS Europa, which arrive between September and March.

Passengers arriving via cruise ships are impressed by the port’s scale, boasting 19 deep-water berths and 5 container berths. The modern Cruise Terminal is a striking white and brown three-story building equipped with restaurants, lounges, duty-free shops, and conference spaces. Visitors are greeted by local dancers performing traditional songs and dances, and customs procedures are quick and efficient.
