Lake Nakuru — Important Note

Due to progressive natural factors like increasing water levels, flamingo numbers have been reducing. The park itself remains stunning – one of Kenya’s finest. Great rocky escarpments tower over acacia forest, waterfalls, wooded hills and euphorbia trees dot the lake.

The fewer flamingos are accompanied by other birdlife – pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, ostriches, storks as well as herons and eagles. The scene here is bountiful, busy and full of color.

Lake Nakuru is known for hosting endangered but beautiful species. Expect sightings of rare Rothschild’s giraffe along with white rhino, especially along the lakeshore. The park is also sanctuary to one of Kenya’s largest populations of black rhino.

0730hrs: Pick up from your Nairobi hotel or Nairobi airport. Depart Nairobi and proceed to the Samburu game reserve.

Day 2: Samburu Game Reserve

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day shall be spent at the Samburu game reserve with game viewing drives. The park boasts big cats and lots of elephants in its desert-like environment, but also some species that you might not see elsewhere like the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and African wild dogs.

Punctuating the rugged terrain are the green expanses of the Shaba and Buffalo Springs Reserve, good spots for game drives. We’ll also be tracking wildlife along the Ewaso Nyiro River, a major water source and natural draw for the animals.

Day 3: Samburu Game Reserve – Ol Pejeta (180 km – Approx. 3 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Early game viewing drive at the Samburu game reserve. From this desert environment, we’ll move onto the cooler reaches passing through the shadow of Mt. Kenya and onto this private sanctuary for rhino and chimpanzee. Here we’ll find the largest population of black rhino in East Africa and the last two surviving northern white rhino in the world.

But Ol Pejeta also offers chances to see Africa’s “Big Five” including six prides of lions and over 30 cheetahs. Other endangered and little-seen species spotted at the sanctuary include oryx, hartebeest, white-tailed mongoose and the tree hyrax.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta – Aberdare National Park (80 km – Approx. 1 hr)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning shall be spent with game viewing drives around the game sanctuary. Later proceed to the Aberdares National Park.

Everything about this national park is different – think mountains with thick rainforests, waterfalls and a cool climate. Even your accommodation is special here – you’ll be lodging in a tree hotel! From your treehouse balcony, you’ll be looking for the park’s elephant, hyena, black rhino, baboon and monkey, plus over 290 species of birdlife including buzzard, hawk and eagle.

Day 5: Aberdare – Lake Nakuru National Park (190 km – Approx. 4 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Later proceed to the Lake Nakuru National Park. As we journey on to Lake Nakuru, we’ll make a stop at the stunning Thompson’s Falls, a 74 m (243 ft) high falls that dramatically cascades into a deep gorge. All along this route we’ll take in farmland and the towering Rift Valley escarpment.

Lake Nakuru National Park: Due to some progressive natural factors like increasing water levels, the flamingo numbers have been reducing but the park itself remains stunning – one of Kenya’s finest.

But that’s only the beginning of what this special park has to offer because the wildlife viewing here is easy and accessible. Lake Nakuru is known for hosting some endangered but beautiful species. You’re sure to see rare Rothschild’s Giraffe along with white rhino, especially along the lakeshore. We’ll also visit the rhino sanctuary here. It offers protections to white rhino and one of Kenya’s largest populations of the black rhino.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru National Park – Masai Mara Game Reserve (290 km – Approx. 6 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning bird and game viewing drives. Proceed to the Masai Mara game reserves with stops at scenic points. Afternoon game viewing drives.

Day 7: Masai Mara Game Reserve

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today shall be a game viewing extravaganza! Everyone has heard of the Masai Mara, Kenya’s and perhaps the world’s most famous and popular park. Why? One reason is that the reserve is pleasing to the eye with its vast rolling hills and beautiful acacia trees. Also, it offers a dense and diverse array of wildlife – it is difficult to miss the masses of animals hunting, stalking and grazing the plains here.

Even more so during the Great Migration (July – October) when millions of wildebeest and zebra invade the Mara River from the neighboring Serengeti. The sight is an unforgettable spectacle of life in an endless cycle of survival. Nearby, crocodile and lions lie in wait.

Adventure In The Wild Safaris offers two optional excursions at the Mara. You can take an early morning hot air balloon ride over this unforgettable spectacle, and also visit the local Maasai people to learn about them and their ancient herding culture. Just ask your driver/guide and he’ll be happy to make arrangements for this and other requests.

Day 8: Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha (240 km – Approx. 4.5 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll depart for Lake Naivasha and its nearby parks. The area is a colourful mix of forests, waterfalls, extinct volcanoes and dramatic towers. We’ll start out on a bicycle safari at nearby Hell’s Gate National Park. When was the last time you pedaled past zebra and giraffe?

Day 9: Lake Naivasha – Amboseli National Park (350 km – Approx. 6 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we’ll go on a boat safari on the lake itself to view the aquatic life all around us – hippos, birds – and larger game like buffalo, eland and impala grazing on the shore. For our third safari here we’ll take a guided walking tour at Crescent Island to easily stroll past curious wildebeest, waterbuck and gazelle.

Later proceed to the Amboseli National Park. Afternoon game viewing drive at the Amboseli.

Day 10: At Amboseli National Park

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This will be a full day of game viewing drives. We’ll spend a full day here at this smaller but impressive national park. Why impressive? For one, we’re situated at the base of the largest mountain in Africa, legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro, looking out over the park. And here in Amboseli, you’re in the neighborhood of one of the largest populations of free-ranging elephants in the world. From your Jeep you’ll see endless parades of these large ivory-tusked giants.

We’ll go on many game drives here, but there will be time for relaxing as well at your lodge or tented campground. We’ve been going strong for 10 days now, so you can take a breather whenever you please. Or not. The choice is always up to you.

Day 11: Amboseli – Tsavo West National Park (100 km – Approx. 2 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll take one more early morning game drive at Amboseli before the fairly short drive to Tsavo West, one of the biggest, oldest and prettiest parks in Kenya. The park is a pleasing mix of hill country, extinct volcanoes with dark lava flows and lush green springs.

We’ll visit beautiful Mzima Springs with its life-giving waters and palm-lined shores. In this rich environment, we’ll gaze upon elephant, zebra and other wildlife attracted to this nourishing oasis. We’ll also see hippos and crocodiles who make this verdant spot their home.

Day 12: Tsavo West – Mombasa & Kenya Coast

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch

On day 12, your final safari day, we’ll take another game drive before departing the park. But your scenic vistas aren’t over yet. It’s a quick drive to the train station at Mtito Andei. There, your guide will assist you with tickets and transfer to the standard gauge Nairobi–Mombasa Train (Madaraka Express), the new high-speed train to Mombasa and the coast.
