The vast, snow-capped bulk of Mt. Kenya dominates the central Kenya region. As part of the central highlands, it is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro.

For hikers, the ultimate goal is Point Lenana at 4,895 meters. This peak can be accessed via different routes depending on your schedule, budget, and hiking experience.

Mt. Kenya Climb Itinerary via Sirimon Route

Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

After pick-up in Nairobi, drive to Nanyuki town for lunch, crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park Gate (2660m).

Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton Camp (4,200m)

Start early in the morning, trekking through the Ontulili River and up the spectacular Mackinders Valley via Liki North Ridge. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route and arrive at Shipton Camp after approximately 7 hours.

Day 3: Full Day Acclimatization at Shipton Camp

Take a rest day for acclimatization. Optional short hikes are available to Oblong and Hausberg Tarns, gaining about 370m in elevation before returning to the camp for lunch.

Day 4: Shipton Camp – Mackinders Camp (4,300m)

From Shipton Camp, follow the trail to Kami Camp below the north face of Batian. Continue west-southwest, climbing the snow switchbacks to reach Hausberg Col (4,590m).

Descend into the upper Hausberg Valley to rest at Oblong and Hausberg Tarns. Then ascend to the ridge crest known as Arthur’s Seat and follow the trail along scenic rock ledges.

Day 5: Mackinders Camp – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Bandas

Start the summit attempt at 2:30 AM to reach Point Lenana in time for sunrise. The climb takes approximately 4 hours. On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro is visible on the horizon.

Descend to Mintos Hut for a full breakfast and well-deserved rest.
