Location

The Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is located on Kenya’s east coast, approximately 350 miles from Nairobi and only 55 miles from the coastal city of Mombasa.

Size

The size of the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is 15 square miles.

History

Kisite and Mpunguti Islands were included as part of a group of protected reserves and marine parks in the 1970s. The Kenyan Government officially established the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve in 1978. The aim is to protect dramatic coral gardens, scenic islands, and incredible marine habitats in the area.

Entrance Fees & Permits

Hours of Operation

The reserve is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

How to Get There

By Road

Drive approximately 50 miles towards the coastal city of Mombasa along Mombasa Road.

By Air

Flights from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) to Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) take around 80 minutes. From Ukunda, guests transfer to Diani Beach (15 minutes), then board a boat to Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park (33 miles).

Weather & Climate

The climate is humid year-round, with temperatures ranging from 70°F to 93°F. Short rains fall from October to December, and heavier rains occur between March and May.

Avoiding Crowds

The dry season (July–September) and December to February are the most popular times to visit. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in late October, early November, or June.
