Kakamega Forest National Park is about 92 square miles in size.

History

In 1933, the Kakamega Forest National Park was officially named a Forest Trust. In 1986, a part of the forest was joined with the Kisere Forest to make the Kakamega National Park.

People can fly from Nairobi to Kisumu Airport in 55 minutes and then drive for 90 minutes to get to Kakamega Forest National Park.

Climate and weather

In the winter, from June to July, it doesn’t rain much, which makes this a great time to visit. The same is true for the high season, from December to February. Kakamega Forest National Park is a great place to visit when the weather is dry.

 

Staying away from crowds

If you want to avoid people, the best times to visit Kakamega Forest National Park are from December to March, late June to early July, or the end of October. These times are just on the edge of high and peak season.

In the Kakamega Forest National Park, you can see strange animals like the potto and the tree pangolin. You can always look forward to seeing giant hedgehogs and Colobus monkeys. If you are going for a drive at night, keep an eye out for civets and genets. The park is home to more than 400 different kinds of birds.

 

The Ground

On the eastern edge of Kakamega Forest National Park, the Nandi escarpment has steep cliffs. Other parts of the park are clearly hilly, and a lot of the park is covered in jungle.

Game Drives

In the Kakamega Forest National Park, you can see colobus monkeys, De Brasas monkeys, the small duiker, and many other interesting animals on fenced 4×4 game drives through a variety of landscapes.

 

Walks with games

It is possible to walk on nature trails with or without a trained guide. The sunrise walk from 5am to 7am gives you a chance to see animals that are active at night, like the Potto.
