Location
The Mara Triangle lies in the southwestern part of the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, west of the capital, Nairobi. It borders Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.
Size
Forming one third of the expanse of the Masai Mara, the Mara Triangle covers an area of 196 square miles.
History
When the Masai Mara was established in 1961, it covered 200 square miles including the Mara Triangle. The reserve received official status in 1971. The Mara Triangle is separated from the rest of the Masai Mara by the Mara River and is managed by the non-profit Mara Conservancy on behalf of the Trans-Mara County Council.
Entrance Fees & Permits
Day visitors to the Mara Triangle pay USD 80 per person, while guests staying within the park pay USD 70 per person.
Hours of Operation
The Mara Triangle is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Vehicles are not allowed to enter after 6:30 PM.
How to Get There
By Road
The drive from Nairobi to the Mara Triangle is approximately 161 miles and takes between five and a half to six hours. Travelers follow the Uhuru Highway/A104 to reach the Sekenani Gate.
By Air
Guests can fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to airstrips such as Angama Mara, Mara North, Musiara, Kichwa Tembo, and Serena. Flight time ranges from 45 to 60 minutes.
Best Time to Visit
Weather & Climate
The cooler, dry winter months between June and August are ideal for visiting the Mara Triangle. Early mornings can be chilly at 55°F, but the daytime remains pleasant with clear skies and minimal rainfall. November and December bring short rains, with top temperatures around 80°F.
Avoiding Crowds
For a quieter safari experience, consider visiting during the months of September, October, May, or early June. These months offer fewer crowds and more accommodation availability, away from the busy migration period in July and August.
