NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
Nyerere National Park
Location
Introducing one of Africa’s largest stand-alone National Parks, Nyerere, located in southeastern Tanzania approximately 145 miles from Dar es Salaam. As one of Tanzania’s newer national parks, Nyerere remains largely untouched by mass tourism, offering a truly exclusive and authentic safari destination. A photographer’s dream, the park is graced by the majestic Rufiji River, creating a stunning natural backdrop perfect for capturing unforgettable safari moments.
Size
Nyerere National Park covers an immense area of approximately 12,000 square miles, making it one of the largest protected areas on the continent.
History
Established in 2019, Nyerere National Park was formed when a portion of the iconic Selous Game Reserve was reclassified by TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority). This move created a remote, well-conserved haven for wildlife, where animals roam freely and visitor numbers remain low—enhancing both the wildlife experience and conservation efforts.
Entrance Fees & Permits
The park entrance fee is USD 50 per adult and USD 30 per child under 15 years, valid for a 24-hour period.
Hours of Operation
The gates of Nyerere National Park are open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
How to Get There
By Road
The drive from Dar es Salaam to the Mtemere Gate of Nyerere National Park covers approximately 145 miles and typically takes between five to six hours.
By Air
Guests may opt for a 45-minute scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam to one of the airstrips within the park or Selous Game Reserve. From there, transfers to various lodges and camps are arranged. Connections to Zanzibar are also possible, often with a brief stop in Dar es Salaam.
Best Time to Visit
Weather & Climate
The dry season, from June to October, is the ideal time to visit Nyerere National Park. During this period, vegetation is less dense, wildlife is more visible around waterholes, and the weather is pleasantly mild.
Avoiding Crowds
Travelers visiting between October and December will enjoy mild days and clear skies. While January and February bring more humidity and occasional rain, wildlife viewing remains excellent and the birdlife is especially prolific. During these months, fewer bookings mean a more private safari experience.
Value for Money
Being remotely located in southern Tanzania, Nyerere National Park sees fewer visitors than the more popular northern circuit. This translates into more competitive pricing for accommodations, allowing guests to enjoy luxury safari experiences at greater value.
Wildlife and Landscape
Popular Wildlife Sightings
Thanks to the Rufiji River flowing through the park, sightings of hippos and crocodiles are common and are often best observed on boat safaris. The park is also home to the iconic Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo—as well as waterbuck, hyenas, and the elusive crocodile. The park is known for its wild dog populations and sightings of the rare African Puku antelope. Over 400 species of birds can also be found in this richly biodiverse area.
The Terrain
Nyerere’s landscape is characterized by open grassy plains, scattered acacia trees, and a backdrop of beautiful mountain ranges. The terrain includes Miombo woodlands, riverine forests, and expansive wetlands and swamps that define this diverse ecosystem.
