How the Migration Works

The Great Migration is a year-round loop, not a single event. Animals follow rain and grass; Kenya’s Masai Mara is the headline stage from roughly July through October, when huge columns pour across the Sand River and Mara River and predators work the herds. Crossings are unpredictable—some travellers see three in a day, others wait hours for wind or lions to scatter the wildebeest.

  • July–October: Best window for big herds and classic Mara scenes; August–September often deliver the most dramatic river attempts.
  • Not only the Mara: Resident wildlife in Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, and Laikipia is excellent year-round—the migration adds spectacle in the Mara, not the only reason to visit Kenya.
  • Book early: Peak weeks sell out camps and flights; shoulder months (June, late October, November) can still offer herds with lighter crowds.
  • Manage expectations: Guides cannot guarantee a crossing on command; multi-day stays and patience beat single-day fly-in gambles.

On the Ground

Where to stay

Inside the national reserve or in neighbouring conservancies—each has different rules (e.g. off-road driving, night drives). Your operator matches camps to your budget and style.

Flights and roads

Many guests fly Wilson–Mara airstrips to save time; road transfers from Nairobi are long but scenic. Build buffer time around internal flights.

Photography

Mid-morning heat haze is real; dawn and late afternoon drives usually give the best light and animal movement.
