Tsavo East – Amboseli – Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara – 6 Days Safari Itinerary
Day 1
MOMBASA – TSAVO EAST (120 kms – Approx. 3hrs)
Your driver/guide will pick you up from your Kenya coast beach resort or hotel in a 4 x 4 Jeep for your safari journey. We’ll take the Malindi-Mariakani Road and then the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway to Tsavo East.
The approximately 3-hour drive will be on a smooth scenic road with refreshment stops along the way.
Day 2
TSAVO EAST – AMBOSELI (300 km – Appr 5 hrs)
We’ll be up with the birds and hopefully the wildlife as well, as we head out early on our first game drive of the day. Your guide may bring you by some of the park’s better-known watering holes, such as Aruba Dam, where you’ll witness the animals on an early morning sojourn.
Then we’re off to Mt. Kilimanjaro and neighboring Amboseli Park. We’ll freshen up at our accommodations and enjoy a late afternoon game drive. There’s much to see in this park, including great herds of elephants marching in stately procession before the mighty mountain.
Time permitting, you can also partake of an optional visit to the local Maasai tribe to learn up close about their culture and lifestyle. Just ask your guide to make arrangements.
Day 3
AMBOSELI – LAKE NAKURU (420 kms, Appr 7 hrs) with lunch stop at Lake Naivasha
We’ll be up early to view Kilimanjaro – this is the best time to view its snow-capped peak when the cloud covering gives way to present the mountain in all its glory.
Leaving the park, we’ll take a last look at its scenic beauty and any wildlife we spot as we depart. We’ve got a big scenic drive on our way to Lake Nakuru National Park.
Moving through the Great Rift Valley we’ll make stops to take in (and take pictures of) the sheer dramatic gorges of the valley escarpment.
Also, along our route we’ll come upon the Rift Valley lakes of Naivasha and Elementeita, two attractions known for their extensive birdlife. We’ll take a break, stretch and lunch at scenic Lake Naivasha.
Later, arriving at Lake Nakuru Park, we’ll still have time for a game drive and a visit to the lake with its pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers and bright flamingos. Also look for herons, ostriches and eagles.
There’s plenty of big game here, but also, uniquely, the park is home to a large population of black and white rhino at its protected sanctuary. We’ll be watching for these immense beasts but also zebra, hippo, baboon, and monkey.
Day 4
LAKE NAKURU – MASAI MARA 220 km: Approx. 4:30 hrs
There’s so much to see at Lake Nakuru we’ll try to squeeze in more early morning game and bird viewing. If you haven’t spotted them yet look for waterbuck, hyena, cheetah, and buffalo.
But now… we’re on our way to perhaps the most famous wildlife park in the world, the Masai Mara Game Reserve. We should arrive by mid-afternoon, plenty of time to take in the vast rolling savannahs of the reserve and maybe a sighting of lion or other big game.
The park boasts one of the highest densities of wildlife anywhere. And besides Africa’s Big Five, you’ll find many other wildlife species on these rolling hills, over 90 types of mammals. So, get ready for lots of game viewing during your days here in Kenya’s most popular park.
Day 5
FULL DAY – MASAI MARA
The variety and numbers of wildlife in this park are unequaled and should you be here during the months of July through October, those numbers greatly increase. This is the season of the Great Migration – a yearly parade of up to 2 million migrating wildebeest and zebra swarming through the park in search of fresh grasses on which they survive.
Streaming in over the Mara River from the Serengeti, the hordes of wildlife must brave the crocodiles lying in wait and the many predators in the park such as lion, leopard and cheetah.
We’ll travel down to the river and enjoy a picnic lunch amongst these many grazers, looking to spot some of the hunters lurking in the bush.
Our day will be filled with unlimited game drives – explore as much or as little as you wish.
Another opportunity on the reserve is an optional visit with the local Maasai people. You can see how they live, their customs and ceremonies and perhaps pick up a beaded souvenir of your time here.
For a truly unforgettable experience, try the optional early morning balloon safari over the park. There is nothing like watching the dawn break over the reserve, lighting up the acacia trees and seeing wildlife stirring into the new day. Your guide will be happy to arrange either of these special experiences.
Day 6
MASAI MARA – NAIROBI fly MOMBASA (Masai Mara – Nairobi 265 km – Approx. 5-6 hrs)
It’s our final day on safari so let’s get up early and squeeze in some more animal viewing on this busiest of reserves. By now you’re an experienced safari-goer so you’ll be on the lookout for your favorites… and anyone else that wanders by!
We’ll head out to Nairobi with many tales to tell and photos taken.
