Serengeti National Park is perhaps the most famous wildlife reserve in the world, with its horizons filled with wildebeests and zebras. The lion population here is the largest of any park in the region, if not all of Africa. But for sheer density of big cats, nothing beats the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera on the planet.
These are Tanzania’s finest parks and we give you a choice to begin this Africa safari adventure at either Lake Manyara or Tarangire National Parks. Manyara is a colorful jewel, filled with thousands of pink flamingoes settled on the shores of a cobalt blue lake. Tarangire is known for its elephants, lots of migrating wildlife, and few tourists. Take your pick of the parks.
We’ll visit these wild, colorful and memorable parks and all the wildlife that live upon these vital lands on this five-day Adventure In The Wild Safaris exploration.
We Begin in Arusha
Arusha is safari-central for Tanzania – we’ll start here and head out to small but pretty Lake Manyara where we’ll be greeted with one of Africa’s most iconic sights – a dazzling canvas of innumerable pink flamingoes set upon the lake’s shoreline. Manyara is also home to the bizarre and curious, but very real tree-climbing lions.
On this safari, we offer a choice to skip Lake Manyara and instead visit Tarangire National Park, a rugged expanse that’s home to multitudes of elephants and has a yearly migration of over 250,000 animals. Yet, despite this rich display of wildlife, the park is only lightly touristed so you’ll feel a greater sense of connection.
The king of Tanzania’s parks comes next as we land upon the great plains of the Serengeti, home to millions of wildebeests, zebra, gazelle, eland, topi and so much more. It’s on these expansive fields that the massive herds of wildlife birth their young before embarking on the greatest movement of animals on the planet, known as the Great Migration.
The Other-Worldly Ngorongoro
On our way to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, we’ll come across the steep ravine of the Olduvai Gorge, the most profound anthropological site in the world. Here, an ancient, fossilized record of early man has been discovered leading to great insights into our pre-historic development.
At the top of the Ngorongoro Crater, we’ll look out over an isolated world of habitats and wildlife thriving on the extinct volcano’s floor. Descending the steep caldera walls in our 4 x 4 Jeep, we’ll come upon rich savannahs, marshes, lakes, and woods holding dense populations of lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, monkeys, and pink flamingoes. Separated from the rest of Africa, this rich ecosystem awaits a full day of discovery of its depth and breadth.
Then, with this busy and immersive safari completed, we’ll head full circle, back to Arusha.

Day 2 – Lake Manyara to Serengeti
Drive Time: 4 Hours
Let’s rise with the sun and listen to the birdsong as we take in the early morning light softly dappling the park. This is a wonderful time to appreciate the gentle stirrings of nature all about.
We’ll breakfast and then head out to the great Serengeti.
We’ll make stops along our route to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch. And then, we’ll find ourselves in the massive reaches of the world-famous Serengeti. The almost treeless plains are home to uncountable wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, impala, and vast herds of buffalo filling these grasslands out to the horizon.
Day 3 – Full Day at the Serengeti
Everything about the Serengeti is immense and impressive – it’s been called one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of Africa”. Even the name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word “siringet” meaning “endless plains”.
And as you take your game drives throughout the day over these “endless plains”, you’ll be in awe of the massive amount of wildlife populating this vast expanse – the greatest number of big cats, especially lions, of any spot in Africa.
We’ll enjoy a lunch break and some downtime before tracking for more predators and smaller game as well, like monkeys, baboons, wild dogs, and even the elusive honey badger.
Overhead, we’ll be entertained by an endless sky of over 500 bird species. The park does contain some forest and marsh areas where we’ll look for hippo and crocodile in its rivers.
Day 4 – Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Drive Time: 3 Hours
The early morning sun will light up the vast plains and its multitudes of predators and grazers emerging from the night. We’ll take in this glorious scene before heading off to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
En route, we’ll stop at the incredible Oldupai Gorge, site of a treasure trove of fossilized artifacts from early man’s development in this area.
And then we arrive at the rim of Ngorongoro – the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. We’ll descend into the crater, a self-contained ecosystem teeming with over 25,000 animals.
We’ll spend the day exploring this thriving world of wildlife cut off from the rest of Africa. Lions, leopards, black rhinos, elephants, monkeys, antelope, and even pink flamingoes occupy this special place.
Then, toward evening, we’ll head back up the volcano’s wall and marvel at a stunning sunset lighting up the crater’s rim.
Day 5 – Ngorongoro to Arusha
Drive Time: 3 ½ Hours
If we get up early, we can catch another marvel at the crater’s rim – an amazing sunrise.
And then we’re off for our trip back to Arusha. We’ll take some rest stops and enjoy lunch along the way.
