Kilimanjaro and boasting vast herds of elephants for your enjoyment.

Tsavo East National Park is the largest protected reserve for wildlife in Kenya. As one of the oldest parks, it has a great history with stories of ferocious lions dating back to the 19th century. You’ll be impressed by the wildlife and the great watering holes where they go for nourishment. Sister park, Tsavo West National Park surprises with its colors, rolling hills, sparkling natural springs and even recent lava formations. You’ll be looking for all of Africa’s Big Five on its golden expanse.

By contrast, Amboseli National Park is small but dense with wildlife – all the Big Five are here, and more elephants than you’ll see at most parks. Sightings are guaranteed! And framing all this natural wonder is the iconic form of legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro, looking over the park.

Tsavo East – Tsavo West – Amboseli, 4 Day Safari Itinerary

Operated by Adventure In The Wild Safaris

Day 1 — Kenya Coast – Tsavo East

Approx. 2.5 hrs

Your driver/guide will pick you up early from your Kenya coast beach resort or hotel in a 4×4 Jeep for your safari journey. Then head out on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway, also known as the Early Explorer’s route to Tsavo East National Park.

Day 2 — Tsavo East – Tsavo West

80 km  |  Approx. 1.5 hrs

On safari, we like to rise early—before sunrise—so we can savour the splendor as light breaks over the golden savannah. This is the perfect time for an early morning game drive when grazers and carnivores begin their day. We’ll “hunt” for elephants, zebras, eland, impala and any other wildlife we encounter.

After breakfast and a final viewing drive, we’ll make the short hop to Tsavo West. This park may surprise you with its contrasts and colors—golden fields, green rolling hills and dark volcanic lava beds hosting an assortment of large and small wildlife. Expect lion, leopard and buffalo, as well as smaller species like bushbaby, hartebeest and dik-dik.

Of special note, Tsavo West features a rhino sanctuary — a protected home to over 80 of these endangered creatures. We’ll visit the enclave in the afternoon and track the immense but delightful rhinos.

Day 3 — Tsavo West – Amboseli

100 km  |  Approx. 2 hrs

It’s another safari morning and we’ll rise early for a pre-breakfast game drive, listening to birdsong and the first stirrings of wildlife as it emerges from the night. The park’s Mzima Springs is a lovely surprise of greenery, palm trees and an unending flow of crystalline water. Mzima—meaning “life” in Swahili—is lifegiving for the hippos, crocodiles and exotic fish that inhabit this special place. Look also for elephant, zebra and other animals that flock to this Eden.

Now it’s time for the short drive to Amboseli Park—follow the towering guide of Mt. Kilimanjaro to set your course. Amboseli lies at the foot of Africa’s tallest peak; we’ll arrive late morning to relax, have lunch, and set out to capture the many animals here. Amboseli is famed for its herds of elephants, often parading before the iconic mountain. While at the park, you can enjoy an optional visit to a nearby Maasai village to meet the locals and learn about their herding lifestyle—arrangements can be made with your guide. Toward evening the cloud cover that sometimes obscures Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak may part, revealing one of Africa’s truest wonders.

Day 4 — Amboseli – Nairobi

250 km  |  Approx. 3.5 hrs

Another early rise for a sunrise game drive—this is the ideal time to catch clear views of Kilimanjaro’s snowy summit. After breakfast we’ll take in the beauty of the park and fit in a final mid-morning drive searching for any animals that have eluded us so far. Observation Hill offers excellent vistas over the park and is a great vantage point for photography.

Finally, we’ll bid farewell to Amboseli and the towering presence of Kilimanjaro as we head back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
