A Four-Day African Wildlife Experience

This four-day adventure is a serious departure from the beach but one that will place you on all kinds of fascinating safaris. And not just at any wildlife reserve – Nyerere National Park is the largest in Tanzania and one of the biggest in the world.

Its landscape is immense, 30,893 sq km (11,928 sq mi), twice the size of the Serengeti, larger than some 70 countries! All that space holds unbelievable numbers of wildlife – imagine over 4,000 lions, 35,000 zebras, and 40,000 hippos – the largest hippo population in the world.

Nyerere is relatively unknown, so you’ll find more wildlife than tourists in its undisturbed lands.

Bushwalk With a Bushman

Experience game drives in your private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep and a bushwalk with a local guide who knows the region intimately. Discover birds, flora, small game, and potentially view elephants, buffalo, and even lions at a distance.

River Safari on the Rufiji

Board a boat safari on the Rufiji River, the park’s lifeline. Observe hippos, crocodiles, and birds like Fish-eagle, herons, storks, pelicans, and kingfishers. During the dry season (June–October), the river becomes a vital gathering spot for wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, antelope, and more.

Relaxing at Hot Springs

Between game drives, enjoy a relaxing soak at the hot springs in the Beho Beho Hills. Take in panoramic views of the plains while rejuvenating in thermal waters.

Day 1

Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner

Let the adventure begin! From your Zanzibar hotel, our driver will pick you up for the transfer to nearby Abeid Karume International Airport. Take-off time is at 7:30 am for the one-hour flight, and you’ll land at Nyerere at 8:30 am.

Day 2

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll be up early to savor the soft morning light and the park coming to life in the new day.

This will be a time of unlimited game drives and we’ll be tracking for the big cats, along with elephants, rhinos, and buffalos.

Nyerere hums with the rhythms of its various wildlife so you’ll also be spotting for hartebeests, warthog, eland, waterbucks, hyenas, bushbucks, sable antelope, and monkeys.

Another unique, endangered, but active species within the park are the African wild dog. These canines travel in packs and their numbers in the park reach about 1,300, one-third of the total world population.

Day 3

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

You may hear the early morning calls, songs, and chirps of the park’s profusion of birdlife; over 440 bird species make their home in these fields, forests, lakes, and rivers.

We’ll have breakfast and head out for more game drives. Talk to your driver/guide about visiting different areas of the park and what animals you might spot there.

After lunch, we’ll travel to the Beho Beho area for a special treat: The hot springs on the slopes of the Beho Hills will give us time to relax, enjoy the warm mineral baths and provide us with expansive views out across the plains.

Day 4

Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch

It’s our last day on safari so let’s enjoy the morning air as we breakfast, with the sights of the great park surrounding us.

Then it’s time to return to the airstrip for our flight back to Zanzibar. The plane takes off at 8:40 am for the 50-minute trip, landing at 9:30 am.
