The Big Five are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros - named by big-game hunters for being the most dangerous and difficult animals to hunt on foot. The difference is strategic planning - visiting parks with all five species, hiring expert guides skilled at tracking, and spending adequate time for elusive sightings. Budget Big Five safaris ($300-400/day) use basic lodges but visit correct parks. Mid-range ($400-600/day) offers comfort with experienced guides. Luxury Big Five safaris ($600-800+/day) provide premium camps, exclusive conservancies with better leopard tracking, and expert naturalist guides increasing success rates.

Big Five animals are present year-round in Kenya parks, making Big Five safaris viable in any season. However, dry seasons (July-October, January-March) offer advantages: animals concentrate around water sources making them easier to find, sparse vegetation improves visibility, and better road conditions allow access to remote areas. Wet seasons (April-May, November) still provide Big Five sightings but with challenges - animals disperse to temporary water sources, lush vegetation obscures viewing, and muddy roads may limit access. For guaranteed sightings, dry season is optimal, but patient travelers find Big Five year-round.
