Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park is about 45 square miles in size.
History
Nairobi National Park is one of the few national parks that is so close to a major city. It was made a national park in 1946. The park is home to the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, which opened in 1963 and helps a wide range of wild animals get better. The Ivory Burning Monument is one of the most popular things to see in the park. It was built to remember when President Daniel Arap Moi burned 12 tons of ivory in 1989.
Fees and permits to get in
During low, shoulder, and peak seasons, adults pay USD 43 per day to enter, and kids under 12 years old pay USD 20 per day.
When they are open
The park’s gates are open from 6 am to 6 pm. People who want to go on a walking tour or see the Animal Orphanage can do so from 9 am to 5 pm.
How to Get There
By Road
Nairobi National Park has five main entrance gates. These are the Main Gate (KWS Headquarters), the Langata Gate, the Masai Gate, the Cheetah Gate, and the East Gate. Nairobi is about 4.3 miles away, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is about 6.2 miles away.
By Air
Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are the two airports that visitors can use to get to the park. Wilson Airport is usually used as a link from another Kenyan national park. After that, guests will be driven to the park.
Best Time to Visit
Climate and weather
From June to the end of August, when it’s dry and cold, is the best time to visit Nairobi National Park. The days are mild (around 55F), and since it doesn’t rain, there is a lot of sunshine and clear air. When the short rains start at the end of October and into November, temperatures rise into the high 70sF. When the long rains start in mid-March and end in April, temperatures hover around 80F. It usually gets to 84F in January and February, which is the hottest months of the year.
Staying away from crowds
Many people say that the Nairobi National Park is less crowded and has more room in the months of October and November than in the spring month of May.
Good Value for Money
Nairobi National Park is close to Nairobi, which makes a trip there very cheap, since getting there doesn’t cost much. The prices for the different types of lodging are about the same as those in other big national parks. The lodging ranges from nice to comfortable.
Wildlife & Landscape
Animals that people like to see in Nairobi National Park
Four of the “Big Five” animals can be found in the park. The only one not on the list is the elephant. You can also see hyenas, giraffes, blue wildebeest, impalas, and Grant’s gazelles on the grasslands in the wild. Wildlife can move freely between the park and the Kitengela Plains because the park is fenced in on three sides.
The Ground
Most of the park is made up of huge fields, with wooded areas that lead to rivers and valleys. There are lots of acacia trees, and most of the plants are dry, which makes it a great place to see wildlife.
Safari Experiences
Game Drives
Day trips that start in Nairobi and last between four and six hours are where most game drives happen. The drives are done in 4×4 closed safari vehicles with roofs that pop up, which lets you see a lot. Staying in a place in the park will let you go on game drives in the early morning or late afternoon, for half a day or the whole day.
Safaris with a guide
There are walking tracks in Nairobi National Parks that follow the Athi River and are led by trained Kenya Wildlife Guides. In addition to enjoying the nature around them, visitors can see wildlife up close.
Lodges & Camps
The Nairobi Tented Camp is the only legal place to stay in the Nairobi National Park. Luxury cabins on the banks of the Mbagathi River are among the other places to stay on the park’s edge, ranging from warm and friendly guest houses.
The Nairobi National Park entrance gates are less than 30 minutes away from all of the hotels and apartments in Nairobi.
