Location

Hell’s Gate National Park is located south of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley area, close to the town of Nakuru, Kenya.

Size

Hell’s Gate National Park covers an area of 25.35 square kilometres.

History

Established in 1984, Hell’s Gate National Park was named after a dramatic gorge that was once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that supported early Rift Valley communities. In 1883, explorers Fisher and Thomson gave the gorge the name “Hell’s Gate.” The nearby Mount Longonot Volcano erupted in the early 1900s, leaving behind the stunning geological formations still visible today.

The entrance fee to Hell’s Gate National Park is USD 30 per adult and USD 20 per child.

Hell’s Gate National Park is open daily from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

How to Get There

By Road

The drive from Nairobi to Hell’s Gate National Park is approximately 55 miles and takes around two hours, following a scenic route through the Rift Valley escarpment.

By Air

A short flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Naivasha Airport is followed by a 17-mile road transfer to Hell’s Gate National Park.

Weather & Climate

Hell’s Gate enjoys a moderate climate, with average daytime temperatures reaching around 78°F during the dry, winter season from June to August, and continuing into the spring months of September and October. Short rains occur between November and early January, while the long rains fall from March to May. The cooler winter months are ideal for hiking and game viewing.

Avoiding Crowds

To avoid the crowds, consider visiting Hell’s Gate National Park between January and February, after the short rains and before the long rainy season. During this time, there are fewer safari vehicles and excellent opportunities for birdwatching.

Value for Money

Hell’s Gate National Park is less visited than other major Kenyan parks, offering adventure and safari experiences at a lower cost. Accommodation is mostly found outside the park, with several mid-range and chain-style hotels available nearby at moderate prices.

Visitors to Hell’s Gate National Park may spot plains game such as Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, eland, warthog, and Masai giraffe.
