The Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is located on Kenya’s stunning east coast, approximately 350 miles from Nairobi and just 55 miles south of Mombasa, making it easily accessible for both local and international travelers.

History

The Kisite and Mpunguti Islands were declared protected areas in the 1970s. By 1978, the Kenyan Government had officially established the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve to preserve its vivid coral gardens, scenic islands, and rich marine biodiversity.

Entrance Fees & Permits

How to Get There

By Road

From Mombasa, it’s a scenic 50-mile drive south along the Mombasa Road to the reserve.

By Air

Flights from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) to Ukunda Airport (UKA) take about 80 minutes. From Ukunda, it’s a 15-minute transfer to Diani Beach, followed by a boat ride of about 33 miles to reach the park.

Weather & Climate

The coastal climate is humid and tropical, with average temperatures between 70°F and 93°F. Expect short rains between October and December, and heavier rains from March to May.

Avoiding Crowds

The dry seasons—July to September and late December to February—offer the best visibility and weather. For fewer tourists and boats, consider visiting in late October, early November, or June.
