Lucky for you this isn’t really a choice because at the Mombasa Marine National Park you can do both at this most popular of marine reserves. This protected area is a favorite amongst snorkelers, divers, and anyone drawn to the dramatic colours and creatures of the sea.

The coral reefs here are world-class, said to be amongst the best three dive sites in the world. The waters are literally awash with sea urchin, crab, starfish, octopus, and more. Paddling about or diving amongst the coral you’ll find a fantastic variety of sea life sustained by the reef such as angelfish, snapper, parrotfish, zebrafish, and lionfish.

And if all those vibrant sea forms weren’t enough, you may also enjoy sharing this aquatic paradise with rays, turtles, and various types of dolphins.

When you’re not taking in the dazzling parade of aquatic life, the park is a wonderful spot for bird watching. Looking up from the sea you’ll find crab plovers, roseate terns, and others flying about this natural reserve.

Besides diving, the park and reserve offer active forms of aquatic entertainment like waterskiing, jet skiing, sailing, and windsurfing. If all that’s too much… there’s plenty of sunbathing on those golden sands under that coconut palm.

Kenya’s Great Coral Reef

The park is one of several marine parks that help protect Kenya’s threatened coral reef. This natural barrier stretches 230 km (143 mi) along the coast of the Indian Ocean. The reef is vital to the ocean’s ecosystem, protecting marine species against rough seas and providing food to a million types of sea life.

It also provides a barrier to larger sharks. With the reef’s natural colouring and the myriad fish it attracts, it’s a popular destination for tourists… as you will no doubt agree.

Climate: Mombasa has a tropical climate with more rainfall in the winter months. March is usually the warmest month with an average temperature of 29°C/82°F.

Location: Approximately 15 km (9 mi) north of Mombasa Island, near Nyali, Bamburi, and Shanzu beaches.
