History

Malindi was once a thriving trading post thanks to the exploration and landing of Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama. When the trading posts were moved to Mombasa in the late 16th century, the town saw a decline. In the late 1800s, Sultan Majid of Zanzibar conquered Malindi, which then served as a hub for the slave trade until the end of the 19th century, when slavery was abolished under British rule. Nearby Watamu is the site of the Gedes Ruins, a shining example of early Swahili architecture and a once-thriving community.

How to Get There

By Road

Malindi lies 70 miles north of Mombasa, an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive. Watamu Beach is located about 61 miles from Mombasa, just south of Malindi.

By Air

A flight from Nairobi to Malindi is about 264 miles and takes approximately one hour. Watamu is a 9-mile drive south of Malindi, so visitors fly into Malindi Airport and continue by road.

By Train

Traveling on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Nairobi to Mombasa (472 km or 293 miles in around 6 hours) is a scenic route. From Mombasa SGR Station, which is 18.7 km from Malindi, one can transfer by road to reach Malindi and Watamu.
